What is it actually? – Some of you might still strange with the term of mini stroke symptoms. When people talk about mini stroke, they refer to a transient ischemic attack or also known as TIA. A TIA is a phenomenon when there was an interruption of blood flow to some parts of the brain, spinal or even retina. This phenomenon will leads to a stroke like symptom. The only different between stroke and mini stroke is that it does not damage the cells or permanent disability to the victim.

Even so, it does not mean that you can take mini stroke easy. If you ever experienced the symptom, it means that your body is giving you a sign that you are at risk of stroke. A research found that about 1 in 3 people who experienced TIA will eventually experience a stroke. You also need to remember that after you had TIA, there is a high risk of stroke within 48 hours.



Symptoms of TIA

The symptoms are quite similar to stroke, it includes:

  • Sudden numbness on one side of the body
  • Muscle weakness on only one side of the body
  • Difficulty in understanding a speech or in speaking
  • Sudden loss of balance or sudden dizziness
  • Disruption on vision (can be double vision or difficulty in trying to see in one or even both eyes)

If you really attacked by TIA, all of those symptoms might last for a few minutes. But in some cases, these symptoms can stay for 24 hours. Therefore, it is very important for you to find medical help immediately after you felt the symptoms.


Test of TIA

If you really get a TIA, you may need some diagnostic test. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan or computerized tomography (CT) scan is the most common test to check whether you suffer from TIA or not. It can also help you to determine what caused the TIA appeared in your body.

Treatment for TIA

If you diagnosed of having TIA there would be some treatment for you:

  1. Antiplatelet drugs
    These kinds of medications will prevent blood clots. It works by making your platelets stick together. Some drugs that included in these kinds of medicine are aspirin, clopidogrel (plavix), dipyridamole (aggremox) and prasugrel (effient)
  2. Anticoagulants
    Just the same as antiplatelet drugs, these kinds of medications will prevent blood clots. However, this drugs works in different way. It targets proteins that cause the clotting in blood. Some drugs that included in these kinds of medicine are apixaban (eliquis), warfarin (Coumadin) and rivaroxaban (xarelto).
  3. Lifestyle change
    This is the easier treatment that you might try. It does not go for you who already suffered from TIA but also for you to prevent TIA. Having a healthy lifestyle is necessary to reduce the risk of having TIA or even stroke in the future. In a simplest way, you may start by having exercise, reduce your sodium and sugary foods, spare areas for fruits and vegetables in your body, have enough sleep and do your medical check up regularly. By doing this, you might avoid the mini stroke symptoms to happen in your body.
